Brain Injury in Young People – Numbers are on the Rise. Why?

Two separate studies show that brain injury among young athletes is on the rise.  In fact, there has a 70 percent increase in basketball-related brain injuries in the last ten years.
 
One study looked at youth sports in Minnesota.  It found that the occurrence of brain injury is rising in all youth sports.  
 
The most dangerous sports were found to be:
 
1. Football
2. Boys’ hockey
3. Boys’ soccer
4. Boys’ basketball
5. Boys’ baseball
 
The other study looked at pediatric basketball-related injuries treated in emergency room departments over the past 10 years.  This study found that the number of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) increased by 70% during this period.
 
Experts are not sure what is causing the rise in sports-related injuries.  They hypothesize that increase may be due to more competitiveness in youth sports, better diagnosis, or more awareness of head injury  among parents and coaches.
