A truck crashed into a ditch off I-64 in Newport News when the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel, according to the
Daily Press. The
Newport News truck accident caused the truck to flip over, and Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Cotten said that the trailer would have to be unloaded and cut open in order to remove the large truck from the ditch. After the incident, the truck driver was charged with reckless driving.
Although no injuries occurred and no other vehicles were involved in this
Virginia truck wreck, many Newport News, Eastern Shore, Hampton Roads, and
Norfolk truck accidents do involve other vehicles, with serious injuries often resulting from them. While the cause of each truck wreck varies, driver fatigue is one of the most common causes of serious
truck accidents in Virginia. Truck drivers are required to spend a certain number of hours off duty in order to get adequate sleep and rest before navigating Virginia roadways, and they must keep logs of their time driving and away from the wheel while on the job. In many cases, however, truck drivers submit false logs to their employers so they can meet deadlines or reach destinations more quickly, leading to instances in which the truck drivers fall asleep at the wheel.
