Spotsylvania County, Virginia - Teen Dies After Tragic Accident

Basketball was Shanta Scott's first love and what she had hoped would enable her to repay the woman who raised her.

"She said, 'Grandma, I'm going to go to college and be a star and make sure, Grandma, you have everything you need,'" Mozelle Keys recalled yesterday as visitors filled her Spotsylvania County home.

That dream died Saturday when Shanta, known as "Shay," succumbed to injuries sustained the day before.
Shay, 15, was hit by a car as she walked along Cobblestone Drive in the Holleybrooke subdivision just before 5 p.m. on Friday.

Sheriff's Lt. Col. Mike Timm said yesterday that it was a "tragic accident" and he did not expect charges to be brought against the driver.

Both the driver and Shay attended Courtland High School.

Shay was a sophomore who had just finished her first year on the junior varsity basketball team.
