A six-year-old boy tragically died after a dental visit to Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Medical Center in Richmond, according to the
eCanadaNow news source. The child, Jacobi Lewis, reportedly suffered cardiac arrest after anesthesia was administered to him in preparatation for a routine dental procedure. Although the VCU Medical Center is considered by many to be "one of the top dental surgery . . . facilities" in the U.S. and even the world, Crystal Lewis, Jacobi’s mother, has demanded that the VCU staff provide her with answers regarding what happened. According to Crystal, no answers have been given. Dr. Jeff Bennet, though not providing answers, commented that the death of a child from anesthesia, while rare, can and does happen. Although he believes that death from anesthesia is just as likely to happen to a healthy child as it is one who is very ill, the reporters at the eCanadaNow news source state that incidents such as these fall under the
medical malpractice category.
