What Should You Do If Your Car Becomes Disabled on A Virginia Highway?

I just posted an article about the tragic death of a 35-year-old man who became a hit-and-run victim as he was talking on a cell phone beside his disabled vehicle on I-295.

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about 16% of American pedestrian fatalities occur on freeways. In 2008, 701 pedestrian were killed on freeways, many of these deaths occurred when drivers got out of stranded vehicles.

So, if your car breaks down or you are in a Virginia highway accident, what should you do?

The natural response is to exit your vehicle after a crash, but safety officials suggest that drivers get their vehicle as much off the road as possible and then stay inside the car and activate the emergency flashers.

If you absolutely must get out of the car, do not stand near moving traffic and never stand behind of or in front of the vehicle, just in case the car is struck by another vehicle. Try to be on the other side of your vehicle away from traffic and behind a barrier if possible.
