There are three different types of brain injury: a mild brain injury, a moderate brain injury, and a severe brain injury. Brain Injuries at all stages can take anywhere between a month to two years or more to heal. There is a scale that is used by most hospitals to determine the level of a brain injury, which is called the Glasgow Coma Scale. The Glasgow Coma Scale is used to determine the amount of abilities a person is able to achieve after the accident.

A Mild Brain Injury: a total of 13 or higher on the Glasgow Coma Scale; requires no inpatient rehabilitation, except if other injuries need inpatient care

A Moderate Brain Injury: a total of 9-13 on the Glasgow Coma Scale

A Severe Brain Injury: a total that is equal to 8 and lower
