What are Virginia Laws on Bikes on the Roadway?

A: Virginia Law states that bicycles are considered motor vehicles. Bicycles are allowed on local streets not interstate roads and are required to follow traffic signs, signals, lights, and markings. When on the roadway they are required to go with the flow of traffic or stay to the shoulder to allow cars to pass. The law requires that all bikes after dark must have deflectors, a helmet, and a light on the front of the bike to see ahead. When riding a bicycle on the road the law requires that a person only have one earphone in and asks that the bike only have the prescribed number occupants riding it while on the street. Bicycle riders are also suppose to yield to pedestrians.
