Louisa County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call Monday afternoon for a man who ran his vehicle into Sweet Creations in Mineral.
According to eyewitnesses, the man was driving a 1992 red Ford van that rear-ended a white pickup truck, which was attempting to turn left into the shopping center.
Witnesses said that after the truck pulled into the Town Square shopping center, the driver of the van circled the parking lot, drove in between the white truck he previously struck and another parked vehicle, and struck the wall of the ice cream parlor.
A mother and daughter who were sitting at the window table were unharmed.
According to witnesses, the driver attempted to leave the scene until a bystander told him to stop.
The bystander said he noticed the driver reaching for a rifle in the backseat, at which point he grabbed the weapon and successfully disarmed the gunman.
According to law enforcement communications, the driver of the van was James R. Grimm, of Mineral. The firearm was identified as a Remington 700 model, a precision rifle reportedly used by some law enforcement and military agency snipers.
Authorities at the scene reportedly drew blood from the driver, who was taken into custody and charged with obstruction of justice, with other charges pending.
