As important as this step is, there is still a problem. For most, football is a macho sport. Big hits are encouraged and when they happen they are to be celebrated. Some of these hits cause small concussions that go unnoticed by coaches and officials. Inadvertent hits to the head often take place when a knee or some other hard object strikes a players helmet in a pileup or when a player is knocked forcefully backward causing his helmet to strike the ground. When these events happen, players might feel a little light headed, but they will often hide their symptoms from their coaches and trainers.
