Student athletes who compete in other sports are at just as much risk of sustaining a head injury
www.kccommunitynews.com; And boys and girls scoccer coach Jon Reed should know. The longtime Smithville head coach has seen plenty of concussions on the soccer pitch over the years and has always used caution when putting those players back on the field. Now, he and other head coaches will have a much better measurement tool to diagnose potentially concussed athletes.
After the football team used it last season, several other sports will use the SAC testing system that will help diagnose those who are experiencing concussion-like symptoms. “It’s so hard to diagnose a concussion, and there are so many different kinds,” Reed said. “It’s going to be a nice tool to have, and I can see there being some problems with kids because they want to play.
This fall, Smithville students who are participating in football, boys soccer, softball, volleyball and cheerleading will take a baseline test that will allow coaches to treat and analyze anyone who might have suffered an injury during competition. The school will also provide the test for those competing in basketball, wrestling, girls soccer and baseball — all at no charge to the athlete or their families.
