Widower gets $500,000 in Crash Settlement

Terri Borgstrom, 50, later, died from a bacteria infection following surgeries related to the crash, said attorney Lawrence K. Land, who represented Borgstrom's estate and widower, John Borgstrom.

The case was settled out of court for $500.000, after a mediation with a retired judge, Land said.
"She had numerous fractures and had to have surgery but the bottom line, it was the lower leg infection that took her," he said. It all resulted from the crash.

On May 28, 2008, Terri Borgstrom, a longtime employee of Chincoteague Island McDonald's restaurant, was going to work when the car she was driving collided in Nelsonia with a truck owned by Tri-Gas and Oil Co. of Federalsburg, Md., Land said.

No charges were filed because both drivers claimed to have the green light, Land said.
Land and fellow attorney Ed Fiorella hired an investigator who found an independent witness whose story corroborated Terri Borgstrom's account, he said.

Borgstrom was transported via air ambulance to Penninsula Regional Medical Center after the crash, and later transferred to a shock traums unit.

She died Aug. 19, 2008, from a resulting bacteria infection, although the family's case did not include claims against medical providers.

"I want people on the Eastern Shore to know that just because nobody was charged, and just because both claimed they had the green light, doesn't mean you don't have a case," said Land.

Land maintains offices in Nassawadox and downtown Norfolk.
