There is a link between football and brain injuries.

Three months ago in a small town in Kansas a young man named Nathan Stiles died from a severe brain injury during a high school football game. He was rushed to the University of Kansas Medical Center for evaluation, when he died from bleeding in his brain. Incidents such as this have caused the NFL, high schools, and the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment to re-examine the safety precautions taken by sports teams to try to prevent brain injuries.

The Superbowl this past weekend awakened the awareness of the repercussions of football injuries. The NFL did a study on the effects of concussions in retired football stars and found they are five times more likely to have Alzheimer’s or dementia than the rest of the population. In recent articles the International Brain Injury Association found that severe brain injuries can cause more than just amnesia in the future, but death 12-13 years later after the injury.
