What You Need to Know About Norfolk Truck Driver Fatigue & Virginia Crashes

Among the most dangerous of Norfolk auto accidents and other Virginia crashes are truck accidents involving driver fatigue. Although any kind of truck accident can pose the risk of serious injury or even death, Norfolk truck wrecks and other state crashes caused by truck driver fatigue often lead to the most devastating consequences. Much like driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while fatigued (drowsy driving) is a form of impaired driving, and when truck drivers actually fall asleep at the wheel, the results can be fatal. Below are just a few facts about the dangers of drowsy driving and the importance of improvements in enforcing Virginia trucking laws (adapted from the National Sleep Foundation's Drowsy Driving site):
  • a minimum of 15% of all "heavy truck crashes" involving commercial drivers result from driver fatigue
  • staying awake for 18 hours affects the body in the same way a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08% does, which is considered legally drunk (increasing the risk of a serious accident)
  • drowsy driving impairs reaction time, vision, and judgment
  • driving while fatigued affects short-term memory and the ability to process information
  • fatigue decreases motivation and performance
  • agressive behavior, or agressive driving, is more likely to occur when driving fatigued
  • electric on-board recorders (EOBR's) are one way to help prevent truck drivers from submitting false logs or violating the hours of service requirements, but EOBR's still need improvements to be effective in reducing accidents
  • a number of states are discussing legislation that would charge drowsy drivers with criminal negligence for injuring or killing someone on the roadway due to driving without adequate sleep.
