Revealing just how dangerous texting while driving is, researchers at Virginia Tech recently reported that text messaging while driving is 23 times more dangerous than driving in an undistracted manner (in comparison, talking on a cell phone is 4 times more dangerous than undistracted driving).

• The proper manufacturing, installation, and use of GPS devices eliminates most concerns about their effect on driver attention to the roadway. Following all recommendations from the manual is essential, however, as well as using common sense to avoid dangerous situations.

• Newer GPS devices have features that reduce the possibility of the driver becoming distracted.

The negatives:

• Staring at a map for even two seconds within a six-second window of time doubles the risk of an auto accident.

• Manually entering addresses while driving is one of the most dangerous forms of distracted driving involving a GPS.

• More and more cell phones have GPS capabilities, meaning that drivers using those navigation devices are looking at smaller screens and face more distractions than those using traditional global positioning systems.
