Reclining the Car Seat Increases the Risk of Serious & Fatal Injuries in Crashes
A trauma and critical care specialist has discovered that passengers who recline their seats in vehicles are at greater risk of serious or fatal injuries than those who do not recline, according to the ABC news source. When Dr. Eileen Bulger noticed "unique injury patterns" in patients who had been reclining in their seats during the car accidents that injured them, she examined data from across the U.S. to see if the patterns were occurring nationally. Not only did Bulger find that being in a reclined position lessens the effectiveness of seat belts and airbags, but she also found that even partially reclined seats increases the passenger's risk of fatality by 15 percent. Passengers who fully recline increase their risk of death by 70 percent. When drivers recline their seats, the risk of mortality in the event of a collision is significant.
Naming the specific types of injuries that can occur when passenger seats are reclined, Bulger lists chest injuries, head injuries, fractures of the spine, and severe leg injuries. When Prashant Kumar, the victim of a car accident that placed him into a coma for two and one-half months, was struck head-on by another vehicle, he suffered injuries to the heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs, and he lost both legs. Although he was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, his seat was in the reclined position. Kumar eventually filed a legal claim against the manufacturer of the vehicle he was riding in and settled the case for an undisclosed amount.
