Dangers of Tractor Trailers & Other Commercial Trucks on Norfolk Roadways

Often due to the weight and size of tractor trailer trucks, big rigs, semi trucks, or other large commercial vehicles, accidents between large trucks and cars or smaller vehicles tend to result in the most serious consequences. When a tractor trailer or commercial vehicle collides with an SUV, car, or motorcycle in Norfolk or another part of Virginia, the results can be devastating, life-altering, or even fatal. If you or a family member has been injured in a Norfolk truck accident or Virginia crash, you probably already know at least one of the dangers of large trucks on the roadway. To highlight the specific risks associated with trucks on Virginia roadways, however, some of the more common dangers of semi trucks and other commercial vehicles are described below:
  • Squeeze Play: In order to negotiate right-hand turns, big rigs and semi trucks must swing wide left. When a large truck makes such a wide turn, the truck driver may not be able to see a smaller vehicle beside or behind the truck, sometimes trapping a car between the curb and the truck.
  • Blind Spots or No-Zones: Although every vehicle has a blind spot, commercial trucks have significantly larger blind spots in multiple places: the front, both sides, and the back of the truck. The dangers are obvious: any car in the "no-zone" of a large truck is at risk of becoming crushed.
  • "Off Track": When a big rig or tractor trailer swings into another lane of traffic while negotiating a turn, the truck is said to be "off track." A number of possible collisions can result, potentially resulting in catastrophic injuries.
  • Stopping Distance: Compared to smaller vehicles, commercial trucks often require forty percent more space between them and the vehicles in front of them in order to stop. When a semi or big rig does not allow enough stopping distance between itself and the automobile in front of it, a serious rear-end collision can occur.

If you have been injured in a type of collision similar to the ones listed above, you may be able to file a Virginia or Norfolk truck accident claim. Federal regulations require every truck driver to go through highly specialized training and acquire necessary experience before driving a commercial truck on the roadway. When truck drivers do not adhere to the safety measures they have been taught, they may be considered negligent in a crash.
