13 die on Virginia roads over the July 4 weekend

Reported by the Shore Daily News.com; Last year there were 6 fatalities. This fourth of July weekend, 13 people died in 11 vehicle accidents that happened in the city of Portsmouth, Accomack, Albermare, Alleghany, Campbell, Chesterfield, Fairfax, Henrico and Prince Edward Counties. Four crashes were alcohol related and at least five of the victims weren't wearing seat belts. Over the holiday weekend the state police stopped 10,462 speeders and another 2,805 reckless drivers. Troopers took 117 impaired drivers and 866 received tickets for not wearing seat belts. Colonel W. Steven Flaherty said "to see traffice deaths spike so significantly ffrom one year to the next, with alcohol and a lack of seat belt usage as common factors is extremely alarming."
