Man faces multiple charges after police chase

Police arrested Ralph Garland Alfred Jr., 47 of Roanoke, late Saturday. Shortly after 11pm., a Blazer was westbound on Hershberger Road near it's intersection with Oak Boulevard, where Roanoke County officers had set up a DUI checkpoint, according to Roanoke County Police. Alfred moved into opposing traffic and accelerated suddenly to avoid the checkpoint, nearly striking one police officer. Two officers pursued him as he sped down Oakland Boulevard, his vehicle struck a Pontiac Solstice. The impact spun the Pontiac around, striking an unmarked police cruiser that was in pursuit. Alfred then fled on foot. Alfred was found more than 20 minutes later after a police dog located him in a subdivision about a block away.
