During the holidays, many people will be traveling to see family and friends, and a majority of those will be driving. Here are a few tips to keep in mind if you are going to be venturing out on the roads this holiday season:
1. Before you ever leave your driveway check your fluids, lights, air in tires, and make sure you have a map and a first aid kit. Being prepared for your trip will keep you from having an accident because of something that could have been prevented.
2. Leave enough time for your trip. When traveling during the holidays you can always plan on traffic, bad weather, and other accidents, if you plan enough extra time, running into one or all of these things will not hinder your plans or have you rushing and not driving safely.
3. Drive defensively, pay attention to the drivers around you. If you see a car that is swerving ahead, keep your distance. If a vehicle is tailgating you, safely get into the other lane and let them pass. This leads to the next tip,
4. Drive calmly. This is not the time for road rage, you cannot control those driving around you, but you can control your own driving. Keeping your cool can also mean keeping you and your family safe.
5. Do not drink and drive. You may think that a couple of beers you had with dinner won't matter, but as the saying goes, buzzed driving is drunk driving.
6. Last, but not least, always drive for the weather. If the snow storm is too heavy, pull into a hotel or a restaurant and let it pass. It isn’t worth it to travel in unsafe conditions, you could be saving many lives just by pulling in somewhere and waiting for an hour.
