Rescue Squad's collision with car a reminder

Fredericksburg.com; The driver, Spotsylvania Volunteer Rescue Squad Assistant Chief Tom Vickers, ran a red light. The Sheriff's Office charged Vickers with reckless driving; the rescue squad suspended his driving privileges. The accident occurred on U.S. 1 in Massaponax, while Vickers headed for a scene farther south on the highway. Vickers made sure the other drivers were uninjured, then called off any ambulances heading to his accident. Chief Wanda Gardner said "you never want to be responsible for taxing a system that's already taxed."

But the accident does bring to light an issue with Virginia law. When it comes to red lights, emergency responders are expected to show "due regard" for the safety of other drivers.

The problem is that due regard is a pretty subjective criterion.
