Drowsy Driving & Virginia Truck Accidents: Suggestions for Reducing Driver Fatigue

We recently posted a blog about a truck driver who crashed on I-64 in Newport News because he fell asleep at the wheel. Although that Newport News truck accident did not result in injuries, many Virginia truck accidents result in serious or even fatal injuries, especially to occupants of smaller vehicles. A number of serious and fatal truck wrecks in Norfolk and other parts of Virginia result from drowsy driving. In response to the high numbers of truck accidents caused by truck driver fatigue, the American Trucking Association has made five suggestions to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration:
  • raising consciousness/sleep disorder awareness: informing truck drivers of sleep disorders and the problems of drowsy driving, accompanied by screening and training
  • encouraging trucking companies to use fatigue risk management programs
  • looking into the possibility of using fatigue detection devices, meaning that programs would detect when driver heads are nodding and eyes are drooping and require drivers to pull over
  • making truck parking more available on freight corridors, providing a place for truckers to park when they've reached their limit of hours on duty
  • developing a program that helps drivers identify locations in which truck parking is available (again, to make it easier for truck drivers to pull over when drowsy or when they've reached their maximum driving time).

Driver fatigue is difficult to combat and is responsible for numerous trucking accidents in Virginia.
