Boones Mill, Virginia - No Injuries Reported in Tanker Fire

No injuries were reported when a tanker truck filled with gasoline additives caught fire on U.S. 220 in Boones Mill Thursday morning.

The truck was traveling north on 220 when a tire blew on the trailer, according to Fire Marshal Bennie Russell.
When the driver, Gilbert Trevino of Texas, pulled into the turn lane for Murray Knob Road, he smelled the hot brakes, Russell said. As he checked underneath the trailer, the seal on the axle broke and the grease caught fire.
Trevino unsuccessfully attempted to extinguish the fire, according to Senior Trooper J.T. Haynes with the Virginia State Police. Then Trevino disconnected the tractor and drove it onto Murray Knob.

The fire burned the undercarriage of the trailer and scorched the sides, but the tank was insulated and did not burn, Russell said.

All four lanes of 220 were blocked for about 20 minutes, Russell said. The northbound lanes were backed up for about an hour after the 6 a.m. incident.

No charges were filed, Haynes said.

Franklin County Public Safety and Boones Mill, Clearbrook and Rocky Mount fire departments responded to the call.
After four tires were replaced on the trailer, it was hauled to Roanoke, where it will be retrieved by Wynne Transport of Omaha, Neb., Haynes said. Trevino was on his way to Roanoke and then Richmond when the incident occurred
