On March 9, 2007 Mario Blanco and his wife took their daughter, Raven, to the dentist for a routine checkup, accordin to the Virginian Pilot. The staff gave her an oral sedative to help with her nerves while she waited, which she had taken before. To Raven, the oral sedative did not taste the same as before and caused her to fidget. When she went into the room to see the doctor she stopped breathing in the chair, at which point an ambulance was called to take the young girl to the hospital. The young girl died in the hospital due to complications with the sedative. The civil lawsuit the parents had against the dentist was settled outside of court in 2009. The father of Raven has a foundation in her honor, Raven Maria Blanco Foundation, which is set up to raise money for safety materials in dentist offices. It is also designed to offer lectures to dental offices to help prevent deaths due to medical error.
