Gloucester County Sued For Medical Malpractice Death

A $4.35 million wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against a surgeon who practices at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester County for the medical malpractice death of a patient.
 
On Sept. 18, 2008, Ethelone M. Chambers was admitted to the Riverside Walter Reed Hospital emergency room with complaints of abdominal and lower chest pain. She was diagnosed as suffering from an acute inflammation of the gall bladder and was scheduled for surgery four days later.
 
Dr. Melvin W. Ressler performed the surgery on Sept. 22, 2008; during the surgery, Ressler cut Chambers' intestine and a blood vessel.  Ressler told Ms. Chambers and her family about the surgical mistake, but the perforations were not recorded in the patient chart.
 
Ms. Chambers was receiving anti-coagulant therapy. She suffered "massive blood loss" and other complications as a result of the surgical error.
 
Ms. was transferred to Riverside Regional Medical Center for treatment, but died from her injuries on Oct. 3, 2008. 
 
The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 4 by Martha Sue Norville, the executor of Ms. Chambers’ estate. The lawsuit seeks general damages of $4 million and punitive damages of $350,000 from Ressler.
