Deputy Tim Garner, with the Mecklenburg Couny Sheriff's office, was involved in a high speed chase Wednesday morning. The chase started in Chase City and ended in South Hill. Other than a broken window in the Deputies car, no other damages or injuries resulted from the chase. Garner was assisting a disabled vehicle on highway 47 when he observed a black SUV pass another vehicle at a high rate of speed. Garner caught up to the vehicle, but attempts to stop the vehicle were unsuccessful despite sending both visual and audible signals. After notifying the 911 center, Garner was joined in the pursuit by South Hill Police and Virginia State Police. The officers were able to end the chase on Interstate 85.

32-year-old Steven Morris from Chester, was arrested and charged with felony eluding.

When asked why he fled, Morris' sole explanation was "I saw the trooper and wanted to make him chase me".
