In less two minutes at the helm, her friend Josh Madison crossed the centerline three times and left the road entirely six times.

"No, no, I'm usually not that bad," Hollyn said on Thursday morning on a sidewalk outside James River High School. "I don't usually run over anything."

Josh said he wasn't usually prone to such poor driving, either, but neither Chesterfield County sophomore could prove the point when given the chance to drive while reading and sending text messages.

"Nobody drives well while texting," said Eli Scheele, one of three simulator experts who tour the country for PEER. "If they're not killing people or themselves, they're slowing down or driving erratically."
