A Moneta volunteer firefighter was struck by a car and badly injured Sunday as he tried to help another driver stranded on the side of the road, state police said.
Michael Shawn Ring, 26, of Moneta, was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Monday.
The wreck happened about 2 p.m. on Moneta Road north of Joppa Mill Road, said Sgt. Bob Carpentieri with Virginia State Police.
Ring was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his girlfriend, Carpentieri said. The two were traveling southbound when they stopped to assist a vehicle that had broken down on the other side of the road.
As Ring attempted to cross Moneta Road, he was struck by a 2004 Ford Taurus driven by Dorothy Brown, 31, of Moneta. No charges have been filed against Brown, Carpentieri said.
Ring, who was a volunteer with Moneta Volunteer Fire Department, was not on duty at the time, Carpentieri said.
The crash is under investigation.
