Spotsylvania County, Va. | Truck Passenger Injured by Tree

The Silverado was heading south near Belvedere Drive when it struck the tree, which was hanging about five feet into the roadway, according to Sgt. Thomas Molnar. The tree, which appeared to be dead, was knocked out of the road, but the Virginia Department of Transportation was contacted to see if it needs to be completely removed.

The driver, 48-year-old Jose J. Molina of Fredericksburg, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment. His passenger, Servando Salinas, suffered "life-threatening" injuries and was flown to Mary Washington Hospital, according to Molnar.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt, Molnar said.

Caroline resident Reinhardt Watson was heading to his job in Herndon when he saw the tree "out of the corner of my eye" in the opposite lane about 5 a.m. and called 911 to report it.

It was dark out, but he said the tree looked to be dead and that it was perhaps low enough for a tractor-trailer to hit at that point. He thought about stopping to see what he could do, but he had no flares and said there isn't much shoulder area in that section of the highway.

The crash happened shortly after he passed the tree, which Molina tried to avoid but couldn't because of oncoming traffic, Molnar said.
