Staunton, Virginia|18-Wheeler-Tractor Trailer - Blown Tire

Posted on Aug 19, 2011

After blowing a tire and losing control of his 18-wheeler Wednesday on Interstate 81, Matt Sprouse tried in vain to right his sand-filled rig, careening left into a bridge wall and taking out nearly 300 feet of guardrail in the process.

"Once it got on its side I just rode it out," said Sprouse, 25, who was shaken but not hurt.

When the rig finally came to a halt — the cab still on the interstate, the mangled trailer halfway down a hill and its contents spilled — it burst into flames.

"I just kicked the driver's side glass out and got out of the truck," Sprouse said.
