Teen Driver Study - First Month of Driving

Posted on Oct 21, 2011

A study from AAA shows that teens are 50 percent more likely to crash in their first month of unsupervised driving than they are after a full year of experience.

Nearly 60 percent of those accidents involved three common mistakes: failing to slow down, not paying attention and failing to yield. Researchers found that certain types of crashes--such as crashes involving left-hand turns--quickly declined as drivers gained more experience.

“We know that young drivers’ crash rates decrease quickly as they gain experience. What our new study tells us is that there are a few specific abilities that we could do a better job of helping teens develop before they begin driving independently,” AAA Foundation President and CEO Peter Kissinger said in a release.
The study also found by using in-vehicle cameras to monitor unsupervised teens that behavior such as texting while driving and horseplay with passengers contributed to a number of near-collisions.
