A local teen is charged with reckless driving after a very close call for a tow truck driver and a state trooper.
It happened Sunday morning on Route 460 in Bedford County near Little Otter Creek bridge.
Cliff Overstreet points to the damage on the side of his tow truck left behind from Sunday’s second accident.
Pictures taken by the Bedford Fire Department show just how close he and a state trooper were to being hit after they responded to the first crash.
Overstreet was originally called to 460 Sunday morning to tow an SUV after the driver hit an embankment and overturned.
“I was sitting on the side of the road waiting for the trooper to finish his paperwork. Well, he finished his paperwork and we got up to the cab and we put the paperwork in the cab and we heard tires squealing,” Overstreet said.
They turned around and saw a car crossing the median headed straight for them.
“When we saw it was coming up out of the median airborne and I looked at the trooper and he looked at me and his were about that big and mine were about that big I guess, so we took off and it hit about the time I got to the end of the vehicle I was towing.”
Sure enough the car hit the tow truck right where the two were standing.
Overstreet says he's had close calls before, but has never actually been hit.
He was shook up most of the day.
“I went to church right after that too,” Overstreet joked.
Monday, he's in good spirits and back on the job, but does have advice for drivers - “When you're driving pay more attention to what you're doing.”
