The Southwest Times; According to State Police, the accident occurred in the northbound lanes near Exit 84. The two lanes of traffic "had slowed to a crawl" of only about five miles per hour because it was approaching an area of paving and road work. Police said as John Paul Spindler, 68, of Havre de Grace, Md., approched the traffic, his Mercury Marquis was unable to slow in time to avoid a collision. Police said Spindler tried to drive up the center of the interstate, "parting the cars" and pushing them into each other. Most of the eight people injured were treated at area hospitals and released, but one was airlifted with more serious injuries.

Spindler was charged with reckless driving.
