Tractor Trailer Crash on Chesapeake Bay Bridge

July 27, 2018, around 6:30 p.m., a van and a tractor-trailer truck crashed, reported the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission. Due to the crash, the tractor-trailer plunged over the side and into the Chesapeake Bay, near mile marker 12.

The four people travelling in the van were treated and released at the scene. Witnesses reported two people in the tractor-trailer at the time of the crash, yet divers could only confirm one body in the cab in the submersed vehicle. At the time of the accident, the posted speed limit was 35mph due to heavy rain.

It was reported that two persons were seen in the cab of the tractor trailer that plunged over the side rail and we are hoping that was an inaccurate report, as only one was found in the submerged vehicle by divers.

The local residents around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel know that the bridges are more dangerous to travel on when it is raining and windy. The tunnel and road authorities monitor weather conditions and lower the posted speed, accordingly. During the time of this crash, the posted speed had been lowered to 35mph due to heavy rain. We are not sure if the rain was a factor in the crash, or not. We do know that weather can degrade driving conditions and increase the potential for a serious accident.
