Fatal Crash in Northampton County, Eastville

Thursday, July 19th around 11:20 a.m., a Penske box truck crashed into a tractor-trailer stopped at a red light. The driver of the Penske truck was pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not been released. The driver of the tractor-trailer was flown to the hospital for a lower leg injury. The Eastville Police Department was assisted by the Virginia State Police and the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office in working the accident.

This case is an unfortunate example of how tractor trailer accidents usually result in more injury to the other vehicle and driver than the tractor trailer. Realize the fatality occurred from an impact to a non-moving tractor trailer. Even the protection of a Penske truck was not enough to keep the driver safe.

We are not sure the cause of the accident, yet Penske trucks are typically rental vehicles. It could have been that the driver of the Penske was not familiar with driving the vehicle but we cannot confirm that theory. The driver could have just been distracted, or could have suffered from a medical condition that caused the fatal accident. What we do know for sure is that accidents happen, many times, without warning nor justification. The only thing we can do is to be as aware and cautious as possible when on the road, in any vehicle.

Motorcycle accidents are, many times, quite tragic and intense crashes and the drivers do not typically come out ahead. From the little information reported about the accident, it seemed that it may not have been possible for the motorcyclist to avoid, but we cannot be sure exactly what happened until the investigation has been completed. Regardless of the findings, we hope that other motorcyclists will take notice and be cautious and aware of their surroundings, drive safely and use maximum protection for your head and body at all times.
