Moped Driver Killed in Norfolk, Virginia

A moped driver killed in Norfolk, Virginia was fatality injured due to involvement in a car accident at Ballentine Boulevard and E. Princess Anne Road on the morning on Thursday, September 1, 2016, in downtown Norfolk, Virginia. A police Spokesperson said that a Jeep was travelling east on Princess Anne Road and was attempting a turn onto Ballentine northbound. At some point during that turn, it hit the moped and driver.  The Norfolk police confirmed that the moped driver was killed due to injuries sustained from the accident.

The driver of the moped was identified by the police as James A. White. The driver of the Jeep remained on the scene and investigators are interviewing witnesses from the area, in an attempt to determine who had the right of way in the accident.

Once the police have completed the investigation, the death case will be turned over to the Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorney. Dispatchers have said that the accident was called in at 6:12 a.m.

Because of the accident, the intersection of Ballentine Boulevard and E. Princess Anne Road was closed and the traffic was rerouted through a parking lot until the intersection was finally reopened, at approximately 10:30 a.m.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident with the driver of the Jeep. This accident was the third fatal moped crash in the past month for our Hampton Roads, Virginia area. The other accidents and resulting driver fatalities occurred in the areas of Nags Head and Virginia Beach, Virginia. In our local area, mopeds do have the right to be on the road and on the travel lanes.
