Eastern Shore Motorcyclist Killed

On July 3, 2018, a loose horse collided with and killed a motorcyclist on northbound Route 13 in Northampton County around 9 p.m. Two motorcycles, a 2007 Harley Davidson and a 2005 Hyosung motorcycle were travelling northbound on Route 13 when a loose horse ran into the road from the westbound direction.

The horse collided with the 2007 Harley Davidson, driven by Shawn Michael Simpson and Mr. Simpson was killed instantly. The horse died at the scene. The other motorcyclist, Constante Nicholas Stephano received serious injuries as a result of the accident and was flown to Norfolk Sentara Hospital. Police reported that neither speed nor alcohol were a factor in the tragedy.

When a fatal traffic accident occurs, most people don’t imagine a horse being involved. We all know the damage a deer can do to a windshield but the driver of a motorcycle does not have the same protections. Unfortunately, in this case, we doubt the driver had any time to respond yet even process what was happening.
The unforeseen is not something we can predict nor prepare for when we are on the road. As a motorcyclist, we are much more vulnerable to road hazards.

Motorcycle accidents are, many times, quite tragic and intense crashes and the drivers do not typically come out ahead. From the little information reported about the accident, it seemed that it may not have been possible for the motorcyclist to avoid, but we cannot be sure exactly what happened until the investigation has been completed. Regardless of the findings, we hope that other motorcyclists will take notice and be cautious and aware of their surroundings, drive safely and use maximum protection for your head and body at all times.
