The accident happened a short time after departing the Tupelo Regional Airport in Mississippi and heading for Charlottesville, Virginia. The plane crashed at 8:30 AM about ½ mile from the airport.

A city spokesperson said that the pilot and all three passengers died when the plane crashed. The plane went down right beside the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo. Officials had not yet released the names of the deceased.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman, Arlene Salac, said that the pilot had indicated there was smoke in the cockpit of the Beechcraft Bonanza. It was reported that they did find some bodies and a large amount of broken up debris.

A woman who works in the gift shop, Laurie Carwile, at the Tupelo Buffalo Park and Zoo said that she heard the crash and saw smoke. She said they thought it was thunder until a man came running into the shop and told her to call 911 because a plane went down. She said that none of the animals were hurt but that they did seem a bit on edge.

The NTSB has reported that the accident rate in corporate and business flights has decreased, while the accident rate in personal flights has increased by 20 percent in 10 years and the fatality rate has increased by 25 percent.
