The latest report of confirmed hepatitis cases in Virginia stands at 40. Fourteen of those hepatitis cases occurring in Northern Virginia. All the cases are linked to Egyptian strawberries. The Tropical Smoothie Café uses Egyptian strawberries in its franchises. Many people have reported to be sick after eating at Tropical Smooth Café and several lawsuits have been filed.

The source of the Hepatitis A cases has been traced by the Virginia Department of Health to frozen strawberries imported from Egypt and used in smoothies in July or early August. The Department of Health said that all the potentially contaminated strawberries were removed from all of the 96 Virginia Tropical Smoothie locations by August 8 or 9, 2016.

There are more than 500 Tropical Smoothie Cafes in the United States. In addition, several other states have been impacted by the contaminated strawberries. Also, the Center for Disease Control, the CDC, is working with the other states to investigate the relation to the Virginia hepatitis outbreak.
