Newport News Man Killed by Fleeing Suspect
Police have reported a man killed after being hit by a vehicle that was reportedly running from police following a traffic stop. The police were on the scene of the 900 block of Red Oak Circle, in Newport News, Virginia, where the man was hit.
Newport News police were conducting a traffic stop around 3:20 PM at the intersection of Tyner Drive and Richneck Road to serve a warrant on a 34-year-old man inside the vehicle. The man was arrested but the police did not see that there was a passenger in the vehicle. This 17 year old female passenger jumped into the driver’s seat and took off driving the car away from the scene. When the driver tried to make a turn, she lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road. As she ran off the road, the vehicle hit a 43-year-old man who was mowing the lawn in his yard.
The female driver ran from the vehicle and ran to a house that was close by to call her relatives. Her relatives told her to turn herself in to the police. The 17-year-old female driver was found to be a runaway from Richmond, Virginia. She had an arrest warrant out on her for robbery. She is now in jail awaiting trial.
