Bus Crash Kills Four In North Carolina

A charter bus crash killed four people in Rockingham, North Carolina, on Saturday, September 17, 2016. The accident happened as a result of tire failure. The bus crashed while carrying a group of college students from a South Carolina football squad. As a result of the accident, the scene of the bus crash, US 74/1-74 in Richmond County closed Saturday.

The traffic accident occurred about 2:35 p.m., near exit 316. CBS News reports confirmed that four people died in the crash and 42 were taken to surrounding hospitals. The accident happened when the driver’s side front tire of the bus experienced a blowout.

The group of college students riding on the bus were from Rock Hill, South Carolina. The groups plays for a football team called Ramah Juco Academy. Scheduled to play that afternoon at Lake Rim Park in Fayetteville, N.C. and anxious for their important event, they may never have anticipated the crash. Unable to stop the tragic course of events, many family members and fans travelling behind the bus, in cars and other vehicles, witnessed the traffic accident happen. Pictures of the bus accident show vehicle damage to the driver’s side. The driver’s side was ripped open sometime during the crash.

Eight people from the accident were in serious condition at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital. Two other people were airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, N.C. Tragically, the bus driver, 43-year old Brian Kirkpatrick of Chester was killed in the accident. In addition, 10-year old Darice Hicks of Rock Hill, 21-year-old Devonte Gibson of Rock Hill, and 19-year-old Teto Hamilton of Pahokee, Florida, also perished in the tragic accident.
