Death By Medical Error

The Washington Post has just published an article stating that researchers have declared death by medical error and medical injuries as the third leading cause of death in the United States. These errors are alarmingly common and cause deaths more than accidents, stroke, respiratory disease and Alzheimer’s. This rate of death by medical error only falls behind heart disease and cancer.

People are actually dying from their medical treatment rather than being saved or helped by their medical treatment, to a tune of 700 hundred patients a day in the United States. Yikes! This article doesn’t even take into account the severe injuries resulting from medical errors.

We should all be frightened to go for any kind of medical treatment with these alarming statistics. I hate to think that every time I walk into an emergency room, for example, for my child’s broken limb, my child may leave that emergency room with something more serious or, worse yet, may not leave at all! Anyone reading this study, done by Johns Hopkins, should be outraged.

Death By Medical Error Statistics – This Is Not Acceptable!

At some time, all of us will require major care and, most likely, will be hospitalized, too. How can we insure our safety and what is being done to improve our safety? According to this article, very little is being done to protect patients, if anything is being done at all. The 700 deaths per day would be unacceptable in the airline or automobile manufacturing industry. So why is it acceptable in medicine? I can’t think of any other business that would find this figure acceptable or consider it as “the cost of doing business.” The only recourse that the patients have right now is to sue the doctors or medical facility that caused them harm. Suing for medical malpractice is currently the only punishment the patients can exact for their death or injuries. This is the only avenue available for the patients to be compensated and to hold the medical community accountable.
