Sanitation Worker Killed In Trash Truck Accident

A truck accident usually results in severe injury, or death, due to their large size and momentum. Revisiting a truck accident that happened a few years back, in this case, this was not a typical truck accident. This accident was deadly, yet also quite unexpected and bizarre. Although city officials said the sanitation worker violated policy by climbing into the back to clear a jammed mechanism, a state agency has found that the worker was following city policy when he opened the door leading to his truck’s hopper to clear debris from a trash compactor blade, back on February 3, in 2011, reports the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry.

When the sanitation worker was attempting to clear the debris, the hydraulic system engaged and crushed him to death. The state agency has cited Norfolk for 19 serious safety violations related to truck accident and sanitation worker’s death, according to documents received by The Virginian-Pilot under the Freedom of Information Act.
